&NewLine;<p>In an age where information travels at the speed of a click&comma; the spread of misinformation has become a global crisis&period; From manipulated images to fabricated news stories and conspiracy theories&comma; the dissemination of false information undermines public trust&comma; endangers lives&comma; and destabilizes societies&period; This rapid transmission amplifies its impact and complicates the task of correction&period; False narratives in democratic setups have been used to delegitimize democratic outcomes&comma; incite violence and in authoritarian regimes&comma; often weaponized by governments to suppress dissent and control public perception&comma; turning truth itself into a casualty&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;<p>Misinformation can originate from various sources&period; Sometimes&comma; it stems from ignorance or misinterpretation&period; However&comma; much of it is deliberate&comma; crafted and spread with specific intentions&period; Political actors may use misinformation to manipulate public opinion or discredit opponents&period; Foreign entities may spread falsehoods to destabilize other nations&period; Opportunists&comma; including influencers and pseudo-experts&comma; may propagate misinformation for fame&comma; influence&comma; or financial gain&period; The motivations vary&comma; but the results are consistent as misinformation distorts reality&comma; damages live&comma; and weakens democracy&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;<p>India as a nation&comma; also faced this problem when a series of misinformation barged the internet claiming various incidents as revenge attacks on Muslims and people with Kashmiri domicile&comma; post Pahalgam attack on April 22&period; Multiple social media platforms&comma; news outlets&comma; organisations and influencers spread false news of attack on a particular community across the country and portrayed a negative image of our beloved nation virtually&period; While fact checking these incidents through multiple channels&comma; majority of the them are found false or untrue&period; Many of the incident were linked with personal rivalry and criminal in nature&comma; having no connection with recent terror attack&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;<p>The line between free speech and harmful misinformation can be thin&period;<br &sol;>Individuals and organizations who knowingly spread misinformation should be publicly denounced&comma; especially when their actions have harmful consequences&period;<br &sol;>Government and legal system can also support efforts to penalize deliberate misinformation&comma; especially when it endangers public safety or national security&period;<br &sol;>However&comma; this must be done with care&comma; targeting the behaviour&comma; not the person&&num;8217&semi;s right to express themselves&comma; unless that expression itself constitutes harm&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;<p>Distortion of facts is more than just a nuisance&comma; it is a threat to democracy and social cohesion&period; While debunking false claims is important&comma; true progress requires us to confront the individuals and systems that perpetuate them&period; By denouncing perpetrators of misinformation&comma; we draw a line in defence of truth&period; In doing so&comma; we uphold not only facts but the values that depend on them&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;&NewLine;<p>Insha Warsi<&sol;p>&NewLine;
