Court Issues Notice as Victims’ Families Await Justice After a Year

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh administration is under scrutiny for its failure to provide compensation to the families affected by a tragic incident involving falling trees at private schools in the region. Despite a year passing since the incident, Hirakshi’s family, who lost their daughter, and Ishita, who suffered severe injuries, are yet to receive the rightful compensation. The court has taken cognizance of the matter, issuing a notice to the administration, urging a swift response to the grievance.

The incident occurred on July 8, 2022, prompting a comprehensive investigation ordered by a High Court judge. The inquiry report, delivered on December 30, 2022, held the Chandigarh administration responsible for the inadequate maintenance of the tree, which led to the tragic event.

The investigative committee recommended a compensation of Rs 1 crore to Hirakshi’s family, who tragically lost their daughter, and Rs 50 lakh to Ishita Sharma, who suffered life-altering injuries. Additionally, it was proposed that the engineering department of the Chandigarh administration cover the entire cost of Ishita’s treatment. However, the administration has only disbursed Rs 20 lakh to Hirakshi’s father and Rs 10 lakh to Ishita, falling significantly short of the recommended amounts.

Notably, The Families of the victims have lodged a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, highlighting the administration’s apathetic response and inadequate compensation despite the conclusive inquiry report. The petition emphasizes the administration’s negligence in addressing the compensation issue and in effectively maintaining the trees, reflecting a systemic failure that demands immediate rectification. The court has urged the administration to respond promptly, ensuring that justice is served swiftly to the grieving families.
